How to Make Agent Execute Commands in the Environment?

Clearly define the target environment, working location, and the results you need to see.

Confirm Mode and Environment First

Terminal commands belong to Agent's tool capabilities; Ask does not execute terminal commands. Before use, select the target computer or cloud environment, specify the required working directory and known conditions for the task; the same command may not be applicable on different operating systems.

If you only want command examples without execution, please clearly state this in your request.

Providing the Goal Is More Important Than the Command

You can describe "Check why this project failed to start, first review configuration and error output," allowing the Agent to arrange steps based on the environment. If you already have commands, specify what results they should produce to help identify anomalies.

For example, if you only want to confirm the tool version, you can first request to only view the version and help information without immediately installing or upgrading. Clearly state the expected checks, which also helps identify in the approval card whether extra steps were taken; if the actual output does not match expectations, then decide the next operation.

  1. Verify the environment name and working location.
  2. Specify the scope allowed for checking or modification.
  3. Handle approval cards according to permission mode.
  4. Review the actual exit status, output, and generated files.

How to Proceed After Failure

First read the error and distinguish whether the command does not exist, file path is incorrect, insufficient permissions, or network failure. Do not always assume a non-zero exit means a vulnerability in the target, nor repeat the same operation expecting different results. Long commands may return sessions that continue running; first check the original session instead of immediately starting a second one.
